1. Plasma displays are made up of cells that contain glass panels. There's a narrow gap between the panels that's filled with neon-xenon gas in plasma form. So once you have the panels properly set, you put a light source (florescent bulb) net to it and the image the LCD creates becomes visible.

2. The liquid crystals produce less heat than the phosphors of Plasma or CRT televisions. The light source that makes the images visible uses less power.

3. The screen does not emit any radiation.

Advantages That Have Disappeared Or Are About To

For example if technology is so user friendly why are there so many brands of televisions flooding the market so much so that choosing the right one becomes the customers' problem. Nuts and Bolts - The technology of LCD and Plasma Systems

While both Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) and Plasma panels look similar there is a fundamental difference in the way they work. Both use precise electrical charges to control a matrix of cells to produce a picture. However, in the case of plasma screens the cell contains plasma gas while the LCD cell is a fine layer of liquid crystal held between two layers of glass. This fundamental difference produces differing results which have advantages and disadvantages depending on their application. So let's try and find out which system is best for your needs.

Picture This - Comparing Image Quality

If this article was about Flat Screens verses Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV sets there would be no contest. Both Plasma and LCD screens produce far superior and accurate images than the older CRT technology can hope to - with a greatly reduced footprint. But here we are interested in the the relative merits of flat screens. There used to be an easy quality distinction to make between LCD and plasma screens based on the amount of light each system produces from its cells. Plasma used to have the advantage of producing a brighter image due to the inherent property of its cells to produce their own light. In order to produce a visible image LCD cells have to be lit from behind - traditionally by fluorescent tubes. This has the disadvantage that even black cells have a little light bleeding through them which reduces contrast. However, backlight technology for LCD has improved significantly in recent years with the introduction of LED banks replacing the older fluorescent tube system. The result is that there is negligible difference in the quality of blacks between the two systems - although purists will still tell you that Plasma rules this roost.

Cooking with Gas - The advantages of Plasma

We have covered the advantage of better contrast control with Plasma's ability to produce blacks that are deeper and more true. Another advantage of gas over crystal is that it reacts to electrical stimuli faster. In ordinary terms this means that it can turn on and off faster. This speed advantage reduces the blurring effect that some flat screens produce when displaying fast moving images. As with the backlight technology issue, advances in LCD technology has reduced the millisecond response gap between Plasma and LCD cells to such a minimal level so as to be almost indistinguishable. Of course our purist friends will continue to argue the toss and will be more than happy to produce millisecond response charts to prove their point. For us mere mortals the difference would be hard to find with the naked eye.

Plasma enthusiasts are quick to point out that their preferred system has a better image fidelity at wider viewing angles. We've all seen the effect on flat screen pictures as we move farther to the side of the panel. The brightness and contrast begin to significantly deteriorate and eventually we experience what some describe as a 'solarising effect' where the darker end of the image spectrum inverts and all sorts of weird effects are produced. Historically this was always more problematic in LCD systems with plasma being able to produce a far more true image at far greater angles. But, we are going to have to say it again; advances in LCD technology...well, you know the rest.

Crystal Clear - The Advantages of LCD

The major advantage of LCD over plasma is that the system is far more compact and individual cells can be faithfully reproduced at smaller sizes. Another advantage is that LCD screens can make use of plastic where Plasma uses glass. What does this mean? It means that you can get more pixels into a smaller screen size, which means better resolution the amount of space you have. It also means that the units are less bulky, lighter and produce smaller footprints. Need to save space? Need a TV for your caravan? Buy LCD.

Fans of LCD will be more than happy to point out that Plasma screens experience something called 'screen burn-in', something unassociated with LCD screens. This phenomenon is caused when a single image is left on screen for a long period which burns a 'ghost' of that image into the plasma cells. In the past this became such an issue on computer monitors that it gave rise the 'screensaver', which is now more a novelty than a system for actually saving your screen from burn-in. Plasma had made huge advances in reducing this effect, it is now hardly an issue worth worrying about.

Are you an eco-warrior? Do you check that every appliance is turned off at night? Then LCD may be for you. LCD screens consume far less power than their Plasma cousins and produce less heat. LCD screens also have a longer life span lasting up to three times the number of hours it takes to loose half their brightness than Plasma screens. This not only gives Liquid Crystal the moral high ground in the green debate but also makes LCD screens more economical to run with less power demands and longer periods between renewals.

Pocket the difference - What about cost?

Plasma has an increasing cost advantage as the screen size gets bigger, so much so that the price of LCDs beyond the 50 inch mark become almost ludicrous. This is why plasma has become synonymous with large screen entertainment. At the small screen end of the market it becomes a much harder fight with LCD units producing good economic results especially when taking into account their longer lifespan and reduce energy consumption.

Skip to the end - Which is best for me?

If you are turning your front room into your own sports bar and fill you wall with premiership footy or perhaps you're trying to recreate the golden age of cinema; then plasma is probably for you. Unless you are seriously loaded LCD is simply far to costly for screens over 50 inches to be viable for most pockets.

If you are after something sleek, elegant and compact to compliment your minimalist living arrangements or just need to conserve space on your narrow boat then LCD is more likely to suit your needs. And, you can say you're saving the planet at the same time.

Another consideration is light. Do you live in a dark dungeon with only candles to light your way or do you live in a glass solarium surrounded by blinding sunlight? The argument over which platform performs best in strong light goes back and forth with each new generation of screen and each new technological advance. Plasma used to have an edge in the light until LCD produced LED backlighting. There was also the issue of Plasma screens being glass as opposed to LCD plastics so you'd have to worry about the position of possible ref elections but then Pioneer brought out their non-reflective Kuro plasma range and we are back where we started. The answer is that it is much of a muchness, but if you have the opportunity to test and compare the two systems in a similar environment to your chosen location then take advantage of this and decide for yourself which best suits your environment.

Finally there is the HD issue. At the moment there is little HD content available to take advantage of LCDs dominance in the resolution stakes but 1080p will eventually become the standard signal resolution. If it were the case now then we would recommend LCD for its native ability to apply pixel for pixel resolutions at lower cost. However plasma manufacturers are producing ever higher resolution screens at ever smaller sizes and will be able to produce screens that don't require 'scalers' to watch HD. By the time HD becomes the norm, we predict there will be little to choose between the two platforms in this regard.

If you're a dedicated techie and simply have to know that you are seeing every pixel, get the LCD. If you don't mind a bit of scaling but just want your picture really big stick with the plasma.

Budget Conscious? Plasma and LCD TV For Every Budget

I was recently looking for the best selling HD TV sets and was really surprised when my research led me to the Samsung LN40C630 LCD HD TV. Firstly I was surprised it was Samsung (big fan as I am) and secondly that it was a 40 Inch set and not something bigger. So, here am I, HD TV expert, and I am surprised at something like that!

I also thought it would be a LED or Plasma, but it was a mid-range LCD that came out on top. So, I had to find out more about this HD TV that everyone across America is buying!

As I was in Vancouver at the time, I went down to the local Future Shop to see what I could find out. Arriving early on a Monday morning hoping the sales staff would have nothing better to do and than give me a demo, the strategy proved good as I quickly found my new best friend Graham the TV salesman. To be fair, I did explain to him I had no intention of buying and would he mind, so a Starbucks Vanilla Latte later Graham was in full flow!

The first thing Graham told me is that Samsung have only just gone to market with the C Series LCD's. And, he was very quick to point out how much the price has fallen over previous models. release. My guess is that economies of scale have kicked in as far as lcd tv manufacture is concerned...that coupled with the obvious increase in demand and therefore numbers shipping and it's a classic price reduction situation. So, I guess we have just reached the point where people begin to feel it is a genuinely good buy to invest in HD TV.

That's fair enough, but I still think any HD TV needs to "wow" the potential buyer to make them part with their hard earner money, even more so in the current economic conditions.

The most important thing I wanted to know about was motion screen blur, a well known flaw in ealy LCD sets. Indeed it was why my first HD set was a Plasma (being a sport fanatic and all). Of course, the old Plasma (now my second set) is suffering the curse of the Plasma - screenburn. Tough choice in the "olden" days!

Anyway, back to the story, Graham explained that because Samsung have made the 630 series with 120 Hz screen refresh and given it full 1080p HD capability that issue has been solved. The 80,000:1 screen contrast also helps keep the picture clean and crisp, even when the action reaches breakneck speed.

I guess with watching sport being a high priority TV pastime for many millions of Americans overcoming this problem at the now lower price means the price objection barrier has been smashed which is why the Samsung LN40C630 is now proving so hugely popular and we are seeing huge sales numbers.

Certainly I love all sports and this was a major issue for me. But what I saw from the LN40C630 lcd tv really changed my view on LCDs.

So, we rigged up a true 1080p source and the picture is crystal clear. And, I am delighted to report completely free of motion blur. We watched a "morning after" replay of a Canucks game in full 1080 HD. Ice Hockey is probably the fastest sport available and the picture was stunning. The action was crisp and clear with the colors bright and vibrant and the blacks deep and dark.

Then we attached it to Blu Ray DVD player to see how the TV performed with HD DVD. Again the Samsung LN40C630 came up trumps. Brilliant, bright, solid colors with deep rich blacks showed off stunning contrasts and a picture that seemed like it was real life in bright sunshine.

Graham (we were now on first name terms) explained this was due to the full 1080p and that contrast ratio. He also told me that early LCDs were only at 10,000:1. Most HD TVs are around 70,000 - 100,000 ratio apparently, and this is what gives the latest sets such highly detailed and crystal clear pictures, no matter how fast and frenetic the action might get.

It's true better "definition" is available with a LED, but I am convinced (after watching) that this set is now so popular because it gives a truly stunning viewing experience at a VERY reasonable price. It's also pretty much "immediate" future proof with Graham reckoning it would be "good for at last 5-7 years". I think that's reasonable.

The Samsung UN40C630 also comes with reasonable jack pack (4 HDMI, 2 USB, PC Input), better is available, sure, but this is more than adequate for most other than the real geeks needs. Low energy consumption is another side benefit. It also uses Samsungs latest picture technology (wide color enhancer pro). This is designed to give better color luminance across the spectrum resulting in more brilliant colors. I can vouch for this! (Can you tell I borrowed some of the sales puff there!)

The one slight downside on the Samsung LN40C630 40 Inch Led TV is that the sound is not very good in all honesty. With just 2 x 10 watt speakers I guess it's not surprising. And whilst the brochure says "offers multi channel sound", well not really. But I think most people buying an HD TV will probably buy at least a basic cinema surround system so it's not really an issue in my opinion.

The bottom line? This is an outstanding HD TV set in terms of performance, functionality and more importantly price! If you haven't yet upgraded, this is the middle ground, safe option for your first foray into HD TV. Solid technology offering outstanding picture quality for any sort of viewing. Having seen a demo courtesy of Graham I can now clearly see why the Samsung LN40C630 LCD TV has become Americas most popular HD TV!

With so many different LCD's currently available on the market, it seems like every manufacturer is now throwing their own unique spin on their new models, and the Samsung LE32A656 is no exception. The LE32A656 retains its mostly black appearance with just a touch of deep red and a glassy panel, Samsung has found the more subtle approach to adding color to a TV without being blatantly obvious. Although it may not be the "red dress" of the crowd, the LE32A656 provides a unique way to add color without being gaudy.

The LE32A656 provides a sharp picture and is one of the few 32 inch LCD's on the market that offers Full HD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. Most manufacturers believe there is no benefit to offering this ratio on a TV less than 40 inches, which makes the LE32A656 a standout in the 32 inch LCD range. With Samsung's DNIe (Digital Natural Image engine) which boosts the black levels, detail, color and motion handling the LE32A656 provides impressive black levels that are coming close to meeting the levels currently only available on plasma TVs, which goes to show that LCD's have come a long way in their technology.

With such high quality picture performance, you would expect the audio to perform as good if not better, but that is not the case. Audio performance is ok, almost "tinny" at times with average performance with regular TV watching. If you are planning on watching movies as well, then you may want to invest in an external audio system, otherwise you will be in for an un-enjoyable theater experience.

The LE32A656 offers users 4 HDMI inputs which are a rarity on a TV of this size. Three are located on the back and one has been installed on the side for quick and easy plug and play access. There are also 2 SCART inputs as well as a built in USB port that Samsung refers to as Wiselink. This allows you the option to display your JPEG's or play music tracks from any USB compatible device. It even offers you a slide show function that allows you to set the slide show speed and even gives you the option to add MP3s as background music if you so desire.

The LE32A656 also offers user the EPG (Electronic Program Guide). This guide includes a preview window, program description, time progress bar, and 6 channel listings, all in an easy to navigate window. There is also a scheduling reminder option, you can select a show and have the TV remind you. You even have the option to jump forward 24 hours to view and set reminders for shows on the next night, which comes in quite handy for times when you have just seen an ad for a show you are interested in watching. Overall the LE32A656 provides great picture quality but average sound quality. It can be a bit tough finding a decent HDTV that is less than 40 inches and still capable of handling 1080p resolution. Fortunately the LG 37" lcd tv handles full HD content and does a wonderful job doing so.

One of the interesting aspects about this TV that separates it from the rest is that it weighs only 40 pounds. The smaller size allows more options for TV placement and the swivel stand that it has can rotate up to 20 degrees left or right to avoid the need of relocating your seats. The viewing angle is also a lot better than some of the other models out there, but things should look best at 45 degrees.

Because of its smaller size, no Picture-in-Picture feature has been included in the LG 37" lcd tv. The backlight starts off a bit bright, but it has plenty of picture modes that you can use to find the best settings that look best for you.

What really stands out though is the above average sound quality in the LG 37" lcd tv's integrated speakers. The audio menu is pretty basic, but it offers 5 sounds modes depending on the type of broadcast and a Clear Voice feature. An SRS TruSurround XT option is also available, but it requires the Clear Voice feature to be turned off.

Watching high definition broadcasts and Blu-ray movies are quite an experience with both the image and sound very good, but standard definition material has poor handling of black levels and offers less latitude.

It does have several nifty ports including 2 HDMI inputs, a USB port and even an RGB input along with S-Video, but no sign of an Ethernet port. The power consumption is exceptional at just over 70 watts and the standby feature that reduces it to 1 watt is a rather welcoming feature.
